Pest Inspection Beyond Termites in Rochester MN

When most Rochester, Minnesota home buyers think about pest inspections, termites come to mind first. While termite inspections are important, SE Minnesota's pest landscape extends well beyond these wood-destroying insects. Carpenter ants, mice, bats, powder post beetles, and raccoons all cause significant damage to Rochester area homes, and evidence of their activity is something we evaluate during every home inspection.

Carpenter Ants: Rochester's Primary Wood-Destroying Pest

In SE Minnesota, carpenter ants cause more structural damage to homes than termites. These large black ants do not eat wood but excavate smooth galleries inside it to create nesting sites. They are attracted to moisture-damaged wood, making homes with drainage problems, leaking roofs, or plumbing issues particularly vulnerable. Carpenter ant colonies can grow for years inside wall cavities, floor joists, and window frames before homeowners notice the damage.

During inspections, we look for frass (sawdust-like debris) near baseboards and window sills, damaged wood with smooth excavated galleries, ant trails along foundation walls, and moisture conditions that attract colonies. Spring and early summer are peak activity periods when winged reproductive ants swarm, often the first visible sign of an established colony inside a Rochester home.

Rodent Concerns
